"Art" is the canvas of emotion, a vivid representation of creativity. Art is the language of heart, strokes of passion, a sculptor's hand, a poet's pen, the reflection of a soul, and can even be called as the sanctuary of imagination. Art has always been an important aspect of expression since time immemorial. Pictographic scripts were the earliest forms of communication used by our ancestors in ancient civilizations, in which people passed information through drawings.
Like our evolution during the past thousands of years, the world of art has also undergone its own evolution. With technological advancements, cultural shifts, and societal changes, the realm of art has a long journey of changes. And now we have two parallel universes of art: traditional art and digital art.
This is quite an interesting topic to write a blog as a person who has experienced both traditional and digital art. Even though I'm a beginner to digital art, I feel there are thing that I can describe from my experiences, inspirations and the changes I faced with the shift.
Traditional art medium evolved with the development of classical mediums such as drawing, painting, sculpture each characterized by it's unique aesthetic principles. From the intricacies of renaissance oil painting to the minimalism of Japanese ink wash painting, traditional art represents the diversity and richness of human creativity across time and space. It often emphasizes realism, drawing inspired from nature, mastery of form, mythology, and human experiences.
The Digital art world comprises digital painting, animation and 3D modelling each leveraging the capabilities of software and electronic devices to redefine the world of art. This has enabled artists to experience new techniques and possibilities that transcend the limitations of a physical medium. It has blurred the boundaries between reality and imagination a lot.
Both traditional art and digital art have their own characteristics, advantages and disadvantages. Let's take a look.
Traditional Art
As discussed earlier, traditional art encompasses a wide range of artistic practices that are rooted in established artistic conventions, cultural heritage and historical techniques. Some characteristics commonly associated with traditional art are:
Tangible Mediums : It utilizes physical materials such as canvas, paper, wood, clay, and pigments.
Handcrafted techniques: Traditional art emphasizes manual skills, craftsmanship, and mastery of techniques. Artists undergo rigorous training to develop proficiency in traditional mediums and methods.
Realism and representation: It often strives to represent the visible world in a realistic or representational manner. The subject is often depicted with attention to detail, proportion and perspective, aiming to capture the essence of reality.
Emphasis on originality and authenticity: Artists create one-of-a-kind pieces, and they often sign their work and establish a recognizable style that distinguishes their artwork from others.
Timeless appeal: From cave paintings to contemporary works, traditional art continues to captivate audiences and inspire admiration across generations.
Connection to nature and the human experience: Traditional art frequently draws inspiration from the nature, human emotions and conditions. Artists explore themes of beauty, love, sorrow, spirituality, and mortality, reflecting universal truths through their art.
Let's explore some pros and cons of traditional art;
Pros:
Use of physical materials provide artists a direct connection to their work.
Through practice and study, artists refine their technical abilities, hone their observational skills, develop patience and develop a deeper understanding of artistic principles.
Traditional art offers artists a wide range of expressive possibilities allowing them to convey emotions, moods and narratives through colour, composition, texture and symbolism.
Working with physical materials engages the senses and stimulates the tactile and kinesthetic aspects of artistic creations.
Traditional art encompasses a diverse range of mediums, styles and techniques, allowing artists to explore different modes of expression and experiment with various artistic approaches.
Studying traditional art allows artists to explore diverse cultural perspectives, and historical narratives.
Cons:
Traditional art requires physical materials like pencils, paint, canvas or brushes which takes up lots of space and can be expensive.
Storing of finished artworks and supplies can be challenging.
They are susceptible to damage from different environmental factors like light, humidity, and temperature. The paintings can get faded, paper can turn yellow, and sculptures can break over time.
Unable to reverse errors without starting over or the artist have to make visible alterations to their work. In other words, limited undo options.
Limited accessibility to certain audiences as physical pieces need to be transported or exhibited in galleries.
It can be a time-consuming process, requiring patience, dedication and meticulous attention to detail.
Limited reproducibility is another disadvantage. Traditional Artworks are often one-of-a-kind pieces, making them less accessible for mass reproduction and distribution. Even though prints are possible, they may lack authenticity and value of original works.
Digital Art
Digital art encompasses a wide array of creative practices that utilize digital technology and tools to produce a digital artwork. Few digital art tools used by artists are:
Adobe Photoshop
Procreate
Adobe illustrator
Auto desk Sketchbook
Clip studio paint
Some of the unique characteristics of digital art that attract artists and art enthusiasts include;
Versatility: Digital art offers a wide range of tools and techniques that can be used to create different styles and effects.
Non-destructive editing: Artists can easily edit layers, adjust colours, resize elements and undo mistakes without compromising the original work.
Infinite reproducibility: Artists can create prints, share high-resolution images and license their work for commercial use and make them accessible to global audiences through different online platforms.
Interactivity and Multimedia Integration: Digital creations can incorporate interactive elements, multimedia features and dynamic animations to engage viewers.
Integration of Algorithms and Artificial Intelligence: With the advancements in machine learning and artificial intelligence, digital artists are exploring generative art. Artists can harness algorithms to generate art and animations.
Accessibility and Sustainability: Artists can work digitally from anywhere with a computer or tablet. Digital creations are also eco-friendly, reducing the environmental impact associated with traditional art production and distribution.
Let's explore some pros and cons of Digital Art;
Pros:
Digital art can be considered a more sustainable method. It eliminates the need for physical materials, generates less waste and reaches global audience without much environmental impact.
Digital art can be time-saving as it provides efficient editing, faster workflow and can be easily reproduced and distributed.
You can work on different layers and can do as many trials and errors without wasting resources.
Digital artworks can be easily reproduced and distributed in digital formats, making it accessible to global audiences through social media and other online platforms.
Learning digital art techniques can expand an artist's skill set and open up new avenues for creativity.
Cons:
It is costly initially as it requires hardware (such as computers or tablet) and software (such as graphic designing programs) which can be costly for some artists.
The technical aspects of digital art may require additional time and effort to learn and adapt to.
The hardware and software can become outdated or incompatible over time. Therefore artists need to continually invest in updates to maintain their digital workflow.
With excess screen time, the artists can face eye stain and fatigue, which can impact their productivity and overall well-being.
Digital artworks are susceptible to piracy, unauthorized reproduction and copy right infringement in the digital domain.
Even though digital artists can digitally sign and encrypt their work, authenticity remains a challenge. It can be easily replicated and manipulated, raising questions about the authenticity and originality of the digital creations.
Why I shifted from traditional art to digital art?
Everyone loves a change, right? I also wanted to explore a new realm which wasn't my cup of tea. I was curious to experience and experiment a new medium. So I decided to just give it a try. What I found was a rebirth to me. It actually helped me to get over my art block to an extend. I could develop a new skill to diversify my portfolio. This can also help to adapt to the changing trends in the art world. What attracted me the most was the flexibility, non-destructive editing and easy reproducibility. With these features, digital art saves time compared to traditional art. Also do note that the time-saving aspect may change depending on the type and complexity of artwork, proficiency, tools and workflow preferences of artists.
Which one is my favorite?
Actually I love both. I can't say one is better than the other, because both of them are unique on their own. I love to experiment by combining elements of both traditional and digital techniques. The greatest advantage of knowing both medium is that I can attract different categories of audience, because few may love traditional art, few may be interested in digital art and there may be some who love both mediums. I love the experience of gradually adding depth by shading, the spreading of ink on paper, the slow process of adding colour to the subject layer by layer provided by the traditional art. On the other hand, I also love the non-destructive editing, in other words the unlimited undo and redo option, drag and dropping of colour to the subject and also different brush sets and tools offered by digital medium. Right now, my concern with the use of digital art is the stain it gives to my eyes due to prolonged screentime.
In conclusion, while traditional art honors the cultural legacy of the past, digital art embraces the possibilities of the future. Despite few disadvantages mentioned above, traditional art continues to live as a cherished form of artistic expression, valued for it's authenticity. On the other hand digital art continues to flourish as a dynamic and innovative form of artistic expression, shaping new modes of creativity, and collaboration in this digital age.
